Our Mission + Vision

The vision of the Dante Alighieri Montessori School is to encourage the development of each individual child by cultivating a lifelong joy of learning in an environment that fosters the positive relationship among adults, and between the children and the adults in the community. The school will nurture the individuality and potential of the children, allowing them to become respectful, thoughtful and responsible leaders, who believe they can contribute their gifts in a way that positively impacts the world.

The Dante Alighieri Montessori School will realize this mission by:

  • Following the principles of the Montessori Method

  • Creating an individualized plan for each student

  • Providing hands-on learning experiences

  • Creating environments and offering educational opportunities that are developmentally appropriate

  • Allowing children the time and structure to deepen their knowledge in areas of interest

  • Developing each child's understanding of their role in their community and giving them access to their community

MARIA MONTESSORI

Dr. Maria Montessori was an Italian physician and educator who developed the educational method that bears her name. She studied pediatrics and psychiatry and became an expert in pediatric medicine.

She opened the Casa dei Bambini, or Children's House, in 1907, interested in applying more widely an educational method she developed and called "scientific pedagogy". Dr. Montessori observed behaviors in these young children which formed the foundation of her educational method.

She believed that by working independently, children could reach new levels of autonomy and become self-motivated to reach new levels of understanding. She also came to believe that acknowledging all children as individuals and treating them as such would yield better learning and fulfilled potential.

Maria Montessori was an Italian physician, educator, and innovator, acclaimed for her educational method that builds on the way children learn naturally.

OUR SCHOOL

SCHOOL HOUSE

GRADES 1 - 6

Our students in grades 1 through 6 make up the School House. In the School House, grades 1 + 2 learn together, as do grades 3 + 4, and 5 + 6. Grades 1-2 make up "Lower Elementary", 3-4 "Middle Elementary" and 5-6  "Upper Elementary".

K0, K1 + K2

CHILDREN'S HOUSE

Our K0, K1, and K2 students learn together in the Children's House. Students enter K0 at age 3, K1 at age 4, and finish K2 (traditional "Kindergarten Year") at age 5.

We are located in the East Boston neighborhood, a community that has traditionally been home to many waves of new immigrants in the city. It has a rich maritime history due to its unique location on the Boston harbor. It is vibrant, diverse, and tight-knit.

We have six classrooms, a music/science room, a multi-purpose room, and a new library. We have an outdoor space with a play structure, several gardening spaces, and room for children to exercise and have fun. We believe it is important for children to have outdoor time every day, understand their relationship to our environment, and get plenty of movement!
